Goodbye Fear, Hello Beautiful Smile
Sedation Dentistry with Dr. Tim Owens in Fort Collins, CO
We’ve all heard the phrase "I’d rather go to the dentist." You may have even used it once or twice yourself. For millions of Americans, visiting the dentist creates very real anxiety. At our Fort Collins dental office, Dr. Owens and his team understand and share your concern. We know that visiting the dentist creates real challenges for people, and we’re here to help. Aside from listening to your fears, providing in-depth explanations, and utilizing state-of-the-art technology, we also offer sedation dentistry.
Two Levels of Sedation
Sedation dentistry provides patients with a safe and effective solution to overcoming dental fear. The medications used have been around for decades, and they’re backed by the FDA. Dr. Owens and our entire team have undergone sedation dentistry training to provide you with the most positive experience possible.
For patients with mild to moderate phobia, Dr. Owens may recommend oral conscious sedation. With oral conscious sedation, you simply take an anxiety-relieving pill prior to your appointment. The medication encourages relaxation, and it eliminates details from your actual treatment. Many patients experience retrograde amnesia, meaning they remember little from the procedure, although they are awake throughout the treatment.
Patients with moderate to severe phobia, or those needing a lot of dentistry completed in a short time-frame, can benefit from IV conscious sedation. Dr. Owens works with an anesthesiologist who comes to our Fort Collins, CO office to deliver the medication directly to the bloodstream. With IV sedation, we can adjust the amount of medication you receive, pinpointing your precise comfort level. As with oral sedation, you will have little memory of the procedure.
You may consider sedation dentistry if you:
- Avoid dental appointments due to fear or anxiety
- Need multiple procedures in a short amount of time
- Find it difficult to get comfortable in a dental chair
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
